The discovery of iron ore in the 1700s led people to Rockaway Borough or Rockaway Village as it was called before it was incorporated in 1894. A center for trade and manufacturing, the community was a mining town with goods transported via the Morris Canal. Today, access is provided via Route 46 and nearby Route 80. The Borough developed as a traditional town with a small central business district surrounded by compact single and multi family homes which have lots of old world charm. A number of commercially zoned properties can be found along Route 46. Parks and recreation areas comprise about five percent (5%) of the Borough.
